"Climbing up on Solsbury Hill.... I can see the city lights…."
The view of Bath was the inspiration for Peter Gabriel’s song. Nestled in the tranquil Avon valley, the beautiful city of Bath has been a mecca for visitors since Roman times. People came from across Europe to experience the healing powers of the hot springs at Aquae Sulis (Bath's Roman name). The Romans built elaborate baths and even a temple at the source of the springs in 60 AD. Bath is famed for its stunning honey-coloured Georgian crescents, bridges and churches - truly a walker’s paradise . During the 18th century, the city spring to life again as a trendy destination. Architectural crescents and squares, built in the Palladian style with local Bath stone sprung up to house the new influx of wealthy visitors and residents. Thousands were drawn to the social life and healing springs of Bath, Jane Austen amongst them. Designated a World Heritage site in 1987, it is certainly a unique architectural gem with fine museums, restaurants and shops. About a two hours drive from London, we will spend the morning enjoying some of the sights, such as:

After enjoying Bath we will drive south to the historic city of Wells. Wells is England’s smallest Cathedral city. Wells Cathedral itself was started in 1175. The amazing scissor arches, while aesthetically pleasing, were an ingenious engineering solution to prevent the tower from collapsing in the 14th century. Wells was the first cathedral to be constructed in the New Gothic style. The beautiful west front is a testament to the genius of medieval architects. The Jesse windows are a fine example of medieval stained glass. Adjoining the Cathedral is the Vicars Close (complete with fairy tale-like chimneys), which was built 650 years ago to house the choir. Just next door, the Bishop’s Palace was constructed in 1210 and is surrounded by a moat and ornamental garden. Note the bell-ringing swans that have been resident for 200 years. They are taught how to literally "ring the bell" whenever they want food (although ducks have now learned the trick as well). After doing a bit of browsing in some of Wells' boutiques and shops, we will make our way back to London. Should you wish, we can stop for dinner in one of our recommended country restaurants or pubs. |
