Enjoy a day trip to the world-famous university town of Cambridge, benefiting from the personal experiences of a Cambridge graduate as your guide. You'll be shown some of the more interesting colleges as well as round the Backs. See where Samuel Pepys and Isaac Newton studied. Learn about the famous University Footlights Club that gave birth to comic geniuses such as John Cleese, Eric Idle, Peter Cook, Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. If the weather cooperates, a punt trip down the river Cam is a perfect way to discover and enjoy the majesty of Cambridge. The town is filled with interesting cafes and boutiques. Depending on the day of your visit, we may well find a local market taking place.
Less than an hour’s drive via Newmarket, we will visit the Suffolk market town of Bury St Edmunds, a unique and dazzling historic gem. The town is the burial place of the martyr King Edmund, who was slain by Viking invaders in 869. During the middle ages, Edmund was viewed as the patron saint of England, with pilgrims coming from far and wide to visit his shrine. Bury St Edmunds also played an important role in the birth of the Magna Carta. In 1214, a group of barons secretly met in St Edmunds Abbey to swear an oath to urge King John to accept a |
'Charter of Liberties’. The end result was the Magna Carta, signed by King John in 1215 at Runnymede. Widely regarded as the cornerstone of the American constitution, the Magna Carta is the most influential charter of individual freedoms and rights ever written.
Although the Abbey is long gone, its gardens hold the ruins of the 11th century Benedictine monastery. It was regarded as one of the wealthiest monasteries in the country until its destruction in 1539 as ordered by Henry the VIII. A church has stood on the site of St Edmundsbury Cathedral since 1065, with significant rebuilding in the early 1500's. A parish church for much of its life, it gained cathedral status in 1914 when the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich was created. Investment to turn what was a local parish church into a regional cathedral has made it one of the most vibrant and beautiful in the area. Many visitors are amazed by the juxtaposition of the "old" Abbey ruins and the "new" cathedral - right next to each other. If you prefer to focus your day solely on Cambridge, we are happy to accommodate your request. We want your day to be as rewarding and memorable as possible. |
